When buying a gas mixture for MIG welding, consider the material being welded, the gas type and its properties, and the environment in which the welding is taking place. The most commonly used gas mixture is C25, which is a blend of 25 percent carbon dioxide and 75 percent argon. This mixture is suitable for most welding applications, including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It provides a shallow penetration on thicker materials, so it can be used on thin sheets or delicate pieces. For thicker materials, a higher carbon dioxide content may be needed. In this case, a C50, which is 50 percent carbon dioxide and 50 percent argon, can be used. It offers better penetration, as well as a more stable arc. For aluminum, a blend of argon and helium, such as a 75/25 or 80/20 mixture, may be required. The helium helps to provide a smoother arc and better penetration on aluminum. Finally, when welding outdoors, a higher concentration of carbon dioxide, such as a C75, is recommended for windy conditions. This helps to prevent the gas from being blown away and away from the weld.
